Post subject: | Chronic sore throats and chest infections |
Chronic sore throats and chest infections Many patients suffer from chronic sore throats and chest infections, for which antibiotics are too easily dispensed. While antibiotics can often bring immediate relief, they also tend to eliminate the good bacteria along with the bad, setting the stage for future infections. Sore throats start off as viral infections, but within hours they become mainly bacterial. Leaving the discussion about viruses out presently, throat infections occur when the normal good bacteria get invaded by nasty bacteria. This is mainly perpetuated by the use of: • Toothpastes which have antiseptics in them; (We have never found any alternative toothpaste which can be used) • Mouthwashes • Throat lozenges. These are detrimental to maintaining good commensal oral bacterial flora. This is further complicated by: • Poor oral hygiene, such as not brushing or flossing regularly; • Smoking, which can negatively affect the oral microbiome and lead to bacterial overgrowth; • Chronic health conditions, like diabetes, that can affect the immune system and contribute to a greater risk of infections; • Taking medications like antibiotics that can disrupt the normal balance of good and bad bacteria. Further complications are brought about by: • Poor jaw development; • Extraction orthodontics; • Extraction of wisdom teeth; • Sleeping in stuffy, unventilated bedrooms. All these lead to a poor breathing capacity because of a poor jaw position. Oxygen is the biggest killer of bacteria and if your breathing capacity is poor, you will tend to pick up more infections despite correcting all the parameters mentioned earlier. If your child wakes up with bad breath, you can rest assured that it is being caused by the toothpaste being used before bedtime. This will lead to regular sore throat infections leading to missed school etc. Please read my article on salt in this respect. When a chest infection starts, it usually starts with a light cough. It may happen early in the morning at 4.00 AM. The correct treatment is to immediately get up and gargle with hot saltwater. If your child has the problem, you must get the child up to do the same. Usually, this stops the throat infection in its tracks. If after a few minutes you start coughing again, you must repeat the saltwater gargling procedure until you have no more coughing bouts. This would prevent a cough from becoming a major chest infection needing antibiotic use. It would enable you to go to work in the morning and your child to school. One of the worst inventions propagating sore throats are antiseptic mouthwashes, followed closely by a number of toothpastes. These disturb the natural bacterial harmony in the mouth and allow nasty organisms to increase, causing serious damage to the gums and giving you putrid, foul bad breath. So avoid these at all costs. The first damage they cause is by killing all the good bacteria and allowing resistant faecal organisms to flourish, which give you a foul breath and cause serious gum disease. The damage caused by secondary bacteria can effect not only the throat but also the parotid gland canal and the nasopharyngeal tube. The third nail in the coffin is from the ingredients which cause cancer. The main dangerous organisms which take hold are Staphylococcus Aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These form a dominant biofilm infection (slime) which PREVENTS ANY HEALING OF THE THROAT. If you wake up with bad breath, then you know you suffer from such an infection. One can only imagine how lethal secondary viral or bacterial infection under these circumstances can become if one gets infected with SARS COV 2 virus because this biofilm prevents healing of the mucosa, leaving it open to viral attacks. If you suffer from a serious chest infection like pneumonia, serious viral infections or pleurisy, you obviously need hospital care. Here again, please phone the hospital or your GP instead of just turning up there, potentially exposing others to transmissible viruses. Further notes: Antiseptic mouthwash may reduce the benefits of exercise: Results of one study show that the blood-pressure-lowering effects of exercise were diminished by more than 60% over the first hour of recovery, and completely absent two hours post-exercise in those who used antibacterial mouthwash. Please read more here Mouthwash use could inhibit the benefits of exercise Toothpaste and hand wash may contribute to antibiotic resistance: A common ingredient in toothpaste and hand wash could be contributing to antibiotic resistance, according to University of Queensland research. A study led by Dr Jianhua Guo from UQ’s Advanced Water Management Centre focused on triclosan, a compound used in more than 2000 personal care products.
